Take a deep breath!
Seeking a simple yet effective way to combat oxidative stress, a contributor to chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and COPD? Recent scientific findings underscore the importance of breathing exercises, a key component of popular practices like yoga, in managing oxidative stress levels.
A recent meta-analysis (Li et al, 2023, PMID: 37122322) encompassing ten studies from five different countries (USA, China, Korea, India, Thailand) assessed randomized controlled trials that involved various types of breathing training, not limited to, but including slow and fast deep breathing, diaphragmatic breathing exercises, and yoga’s pranayama. The study participants comprised both healthy individuals and patients with COPD, hypertension, or diabetes.
The results were promising. Participants who engaged in any of the breathing exercises experienced significant changes in key oxidative stress biomarkers. Specifically, increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH), and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content were observed. These findings suggest that a variety of breathing exercises can be a valuable tool in reducing oxidative stress and its associated chronic diseases.

Interestingly, another systematic review (Jayawardena et al, 2020 PMID: 32669763) exploring the therapeutic benefits of Pranayama (Yogic Breathing) indicated physiological and psychological benefits, particularly in patients with respiratory diseases like bronchial asthma. The study found that pranayama practice led to improvements in pulse rate, systolic blood pressure, and respiratory function measurements, as well as a reduction in the frequency of attacks, severity, and medication requirement, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life. This further supports the notion that pranayama and other breathing exercises can have a substantial impact on health and wellness.
To sum up, incorporating regular breathing exercises, whether it be yoga’s pranayama or simple deep breathing, into your daily routine may help increase antioxidant activities and decrease harmful substances in the body, ultimately supporting better health and wellness.
So, take a deep breath and unlock the power of breath to combat oxidative stress and promote better health!
