The Potential of Acupuncture in Alleviating Anxiety Symptoms
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) stands as a prevalent and chronic anxiety disorder, affecting 5–7% of the population. Particularly common in women, GAD’s incidence has seen a surge, notably during the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic. Characterized by persistent, uncontrollable, and excessive anxiety, GAD often brings about debilitating physical symptoms like sleep disturbances and muscle tension. The urgency to find effective treatments is heightened by the limitations and potential adverse effects of conventional neurological drugs.
The Role of Serotonin in Anxiety:
Modern medical research places significant emphasis on the serotonin system (5-HT) in understanding fear and anxiety. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been a primary focus in addressing GAD, concerns regarding their adverse effects and potential physical dependence have arisen. This necessitates the exploration of alternative, effective treatments.
As a result, patients are increasingly seeking complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments in conjunction with conventional medications to alleviate anxiety symptoms. Acupuncture, known for its targeted, flexible, and safe approach, has emerged as a promising adjuvant therapy for GAD.
Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
A recent PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Li et al. (PMID: 36626458) sought to address these questions.
The study focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) where acupuncture was the primary intervention for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Results from 27 studies involving 1782 participants demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture in alleviating anxiety symptoms. The acupuncture group exhibited significantly better outcomes in Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) scores, total effective rate, and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) scores compared to the control group. Additionally, the acupuncture group experienced fewer adverse events, emphasizing its safety profile.

This Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis affirms acupuncture’s effectiveness in relieving anxiety symptoms in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. With fewer side effects compared to conventional treatments, acupuncture offers a promising avenue for individuals seeking holistic approaches to anxiety management. While these findings are compelling, further high-quality clinical trials with larger sample sizes will be essential to reinforce these results. Acupuncture holds the potential to significantly enhance the standard of care for individuals, offering a valuable adjunctive therapy alongside existing treatments.
